Moving your files from your H: drive to your Google Drive will give you the benefit of being able to access your files outside of the district on any device.  In addition, your quota is also greater than it is on your H: drive.

Note that storing files in Google Drive does not mean all your Office documents will become Google Docs.  They will open with the same program that they do via your H: drive.

To do so, the first step is to make sure you’re logged in to Google Drive for Desktop.  The program should already be installed on all district desktops and laptops.

The Drive window will pop up automatically at login if you’ve never logged in and ask you to login with your scolonie.org Google credentials.  If the window was closed it can be opened via the taskbar in the lower right.

Or click the windows icon and type “Drive”

Once logged in you will see a mapped drive when opening File Explorer.  If it is not expanded already, click the arrow next to “This PC” to have the drive letters show up.

You can move files into this drive the same way you would move files in your H: drive via copy (or cut) and paste.

Go to your H: drive and copy the files/folders you want to move and then go into the “Google Drive” folder and then “My Drive” and Paste.

You can either pick and choose what you want to move, or you can move the entirety of your H: drive to your Google Drive.  To do this, go into your H: drive and push Ctrl A to “Select All.”

Push Ctrl C to copy, and then go to Google Drive > My Drive and Ctrl V to paste (or right click and Paste)

Your files will begin uploading to Google Drive.  This may take some time to complete depending on the number of files you have.  The files will continue to upload in the background as you use the computer.

You will be able to tell which files have been uploaded based on the “Cloud” that will show up on the file/folder.  If a cloud is shown then it means the upload has been completed.

You can also double check the status by going to drive.google.com within Chrome.  The files shown here have made their way to the cloud storage.

Going forward, when saving files look for the "Google Drive" letter instead of your H: drive as you previously did.

H: Drive Cleanup

Once you have verified your files are in your Google Drive it would be a good idea to either delete the files from your H: drive or move them into a subfolder to “break” any shortcuts you may have.  This will prevent you from accidentally opening a file from your H: drive when you really want to start working from your Google Drive.

If you want to “Archive” your H: drive as opposed to deleting files, right click your H: drive and click New > Folder.  Call the folder something like “Archive.”

Once the folder has been created push Ctrl A to select all files.  Hold down the Ctrl button and click the folder you just created to deselect the folder.  All files besides the Archive folder will now be selected - click the collection of files and drag it into the Archive folder.

Once this has been completed, going to your H: drive should only show a single folder - the archive folder just created.
